probably the most important things to me growing up were the family i did have and my much loved pets.
as i didn't really spend too much time with my english grandma due to the overseas boundary. I wasn't too attached to her.
The same was for my australian grandma, although my brother and i were close when we were younger. As she went down hill mentally and phsycially, we sort of got separated in seeing each other.
So therefore when they both died i wasn't as upset as i probably thought i would be.
But as for my pets. Which both died recently after having them for such a long time.
Probably hit me harder...
They remain by your side every day.
You come home.
Having had a shit day, and they're waiting to comfort you.
So when they died, i was devastated.
Which was strange considering the lack of emotin i had when my grandmothers died...

So i think I've decided on a presentation method for folio review.
I'm going to collate some of my images and writing into an old book.
I was going through one of many bookcases filled with my mum's old books.
And i came across an old book titled 'Came to believe...' 'The spiritual adventure of A.A as experienced by individual members.'
Knowing first hand what my mum's been through, i thought it would be a very strong theme to explore in combination with my work. And as I'm using some family portraits and images of her, it would be relevant.

I thought using the book as the bones for my images and work to be displayed in would create something very emotive.
So using the pages as frames, I'll mount my small images and relevant work within the book's existing pages.

The image above is similar to an image i did late last year.

I really like the added meaning of hiding someones identity.
But i think if i was to do something similar, I'd edit the image after it was taken rather than have the model/subect wearing a mask.

West Space Gallery, Melbourne

Went along with a mate on the weekend to have a look at a group show at Westspace.
There were a few artists being exhibited but i was there to see a collaboration of visual artists who call themselves 'Greatest Hits'. They create video and installation pieces which are pretty wild.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to one member of GH, Simon. He was a cool dude who told me a bit out about how they produce their work and why.

'There is no escape from the hours and the days. Neither from tomorrow nor from yesterday because yesterday has deformed us, or been deformed by us... Yesterday is not a milestone that has been passed, but a daystone on the beaten track of the years, and irremediably part of us, within us heavy and dangerous. We are not merely more weary because of yesterday, we are other, no longer what we were before the calamity of yesterday.'

Had a look at the Bill Viola video installation.
Really blew me away.
I loved the concept and the way it was presented.

In the installation, three video screens become surfaces for the manifestation of images of the dead attempting to re-enter our world. The physical threshold through which the figures pass is not a digital effect, but actually a ‘sheet’ of cascading water.

Ocean without a shore was originally installed in a 15th century chapel for the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and directly incorporated the church’s internal architecture by using three existing stone alters as recesses for video screens. For the installation at NGV, the chapel is evoked conceptually through the creation of an intimate space built within an exhibition gallery."

Went and visited a fantasy world created in Anakie (a town in the middle of nowhere) called Fairy Park. Apparently it was created in 1959. And from our visit, hadn't had much improvements since then. It has small little displays depicting fairy tales with the use of old, mechanical singing puppet creatures. Most hand crafted by some old bloke. They are falling apart and somewhat scary. Took some 'happy snaps' to document our visit.

I've been experimenting with portraits of my parents. Masking found images of stars and cosmic wonders into their hair areas. I really like the combination of imagery and the rawness of the portraits. Not very flattering for the models. but very honest and very real!

Set in a world somewhere between dreams and waking, haunted girls inhabit strange rooms alongside shadows, wolves, dolls, and forests, where they morph into princesses, witches and prisoners.

Vintage Dolls is a successful exhibition showcasing Everton’s skill in theme, composition and production and proves her insight in to the power of childhood symbolism. Most interesting about the show is the way it demonstrates, either deliberately or by accident, the power of the child in art. That we as visual creatures, having come to know the world through our own childhoods, relate so strongly to these symbols. The image of the child runs far deeper than aesthetics or titillation and is a subject that demands our full and proper attention, requiring the viewer to exercise a more thorough process of self reflection as to how we should react to depictions of children within contemporary culture.

The above image has a very simple but effective lighting setup. A main fill light filling the scene from the right. As well as a warm (summerish) light gently flowing in from the rear windows.
I really like this image for the use of the props and the nostalgic feel it gives the image. The idea of fresh faced young girls and these old fashioned, rusted objects they are interacting with. I also dig the green wallpaper walls/floor and its relationship with the yellow light, looks beautiful.

The image above has a lighting setup consisting of a soft fill light from the left of shot. There is also flash placed behind the pram. The simple composition in this image really works well. The power of childhood symbolism is really displayed in this image with the young girl dressing in womens clothing and pushing a 'child' in a pram. A child that is physically to big for the pram...a lot underlying themes are going on.

Peter Fitzpatrick spent five months in the city of Prague Czech Republic as an artist, tourist and observer. The characters that he has created in the studio are taken from the streets of everyday Prague.

Instead of taking a camera into the public space Fitzpatrick packed a trusty Tesco A6 Note Book and a pencil to document what he observed.This action was to combat against the increasing abuse a street photographer experiences from their subject or the authorities. On Fitzpatrick's return to the studio, memory and his basic lead scratchings came together to reconstruct a faithful depiction of his subject. As with the nature of photography there were some technical glitches that are rendered in the final images. Like double exposures his memory and notes overlap, diffuse and merge, yet the images retain their photographic truth.

The way Fitzpatrick exhibitied work was original and really effective. He printed his images on blank wooden doors. he did this with UV cured ink jet prints. The doors were then simply put up against the gallery walls. The relationship between the way the prints were exhibited and the concepts and themes present in the images worked really well together.

Black & white: documenting Indigenous Australia surveys the history of photographers' efforts to document Indigenous Australians. Drawing primarily on material in the MGA Collection, this exhibition features 35 black-and-white photographs by some of Australia's best-known photographers, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

As we mark the anniversary of the Prime Minister's apology to the Stolen Generation, it is a good time to look at the ways Indigenous Australians have been depicted in the history of Australian photography.

In this particular exhibition, i really liked the photographs documenting the indigenous people early on during Australia's colonization. The way in which the white people photographed the aboriginals made them look even more ancient. The studio portrait by J.W Lindt really makes the man look like his from some forgotten time. And the quality of the image considering it was taken in 1873 is amazing.
The same with the portrait by Fred Kruger, his image makes the man look somewhat fantastical, like this man is from some some fantasy world.

Then & Now: South African photography is a dialogue between eight documentary photographers whose practices traverse two highly distinctive periods in South African history: before and after the country's transition to democracy.

David Goldblatt's work really appealed to me. His photo's all had amazing compositions and really documented the effects of the Apartheid and how the country was racially segregated. His images also document the juxtaposition between extreme wealth and extreme poverty.

The image above is so, so powerful. I love the way it is composed and emphasizes the scale of the desk to the small little man sitting behind it.

Gisele Wulfsohn's work was also very appealing. She mainly documented gender, education and health issues (HIV) that were taking place during the Apartheid.

Her work is vibrant but really captures the raw emotion of the subjects.

Graeme Williams work probably emotionally effected me the most. His upfront, documentation of what exactly was going on in South Afirca during the racial segregation and didn't hold back on what images he wanted to capture. They're all hard hitting and extremely powerful. Technically his work was quite straightforward but his main purpose was to document the moment. He got down in the moment and personally captured it.
The image of the dead protestor on the footpath with the 'pretty woman' sign is very effective. The combination of imagery really makes the image powerful.

The above image was also one of my favourites of the exhibition. It depicts an aids victim lying in hospital. It's brutally real and shows exactly what is going on. I particurly like the relationship between the two images inside the image.

I've started thinking about to exhibit my work for the mid year exhibition. After discussing it with a few people, i don't really want to go down the 'mount board' road. I would really like to use light boxes. But only small, little ones. I might have to start sussing out how to build/design them...hmm.

After some feedback.
I've decided to change the name of this particular blog.
The name is more personal now i guess.
And 'anotheryearofpic' sounded a bit negative.
Not that 'After this, i am still no one' is in anyway positive.
But 'anotheryearofpic' made it sound like "fuck, not ANOTHER year" kind of thing.
And in a way, i don't want to be 'someone' in the photographic world.
I'm happy making images for myself and others who want to see the reasoning behind why I've decided to capture moments in time and how they have affected me.

Went for a walk down Newlands Rd. Came across a junkyard that had over ten stray cats. Then i was approached from behind by an old italian women. She told me that the cats live in the lot, and she comes and feeds them nightly as the owner of the junkyard is trying to starve them to get rid of them. Hmmm. Taken when on a toilet stop near Strathalbyn in SA. Very impressed with the colour. Super saturated. Negs need some cleaning.
I really like the 4th image down. Just the simple three part composition. And i like the detail of the hay bail in the distance...
Having grown up in the city and not experiencing the countryside very much. I was blown away by the colours of fields, trees, shrubs, dry dams etc. I was so suprised at how much was alive out there, i was expecting brown, brown and more brown. But a lot was thriving.

I noticed this farm whilst driving to South Australia. On the way back to Melb, i decided to stop and have a look. It had been completely abandoned. I felt a little sad as whoever was living here perhaps found it to tough to survive and just had to get up and go... It was in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps it belonged to some old bloke who karked it and there were no family members prepared to keep it running... I like the mystery behind why it was left to decay and rot.

What is Light?
Light is the basis for the sense of sight and for the perception of colour.
It is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is visible to the human eye.

What is Electromagnatism?
Electromagnetism is the physics of the electromagnetic field, a field which exerts a force on particles with the property of electric charge and which is reciprocally affected by the presence and motion of such particles.
As it turns out, what is thought of as "light" is actually a propagating oscillatory disturbance in the electromagnetic field, i.e., an electromagnetic wave. Euclid wrote Optica, in which he studied the properties of light. Euclid postulated that light travelled in straight lines and he described the laws of reflection and studied them mathematically.
He is the most prominent mathematician of antiquity best known for his treatise on geometry 'The Elements'. The long lasting nature of 'The Elements' must make Euclid the leading mathematics teacher of all time.

Briefly explain Empedocles philosophy.
Empedocles thought that everything was composed of four elements; fire, air, earth and water. He believed that Aphrodite made the human eye out of the four elements and that she lit the fire in the eye which shone out from the eye making sight possible. If this were true, then one could see during the night just as well as during the day, so Empedocles postulated an interaction between rays from the eyes and rays from a source such as the sun.

Why is Ibn al-Hasan considered to be one of the most distinguishing and prolific mathematicians in the medieval tradition? What were his theories on light, colour and vision?
Ibn al-Hasan is recognized for his experiments on optics, including experiments on lenses, mirrors, refraction, reflection, and the dispersion of light into its constituent colours.
He studied binocular vision and the Moon illusion, described the finite speed of light, and argued that it is made of particles travelling in straight lines. He was also the first to reduce reflected and refracted light rays into vertical and horizontal components, which was a fundamental development in geometric optics.
As he conceptualized the essential principles of pinhole projection from his experiments with the pinhole camera, he considered image inversion to also occur in the eye, and viewed the pupil as being similar to an aperture. Regarding the process of image formation, he incorrectly agreed with Avicenna that the lens was the receptive organ of sight, but correctly hinted at the retina being involved in the process.

Isaac Newton performed some experiements on light and used them to explain that white light was made up of a mixture of colours. How did he do this?
In 1666 Isaac Newton first proposed and demonstrated that white light was made up from a mixture of coloured lights.
If white light is passed through a prism, a band of colours called a spectrum is produced. This splitting of white light into its component colours is called dispersion. The order of the colours within the spectrum is always the same. A second inverted prism placed next to the first can be used to reverse the process, combining the coloured lights to make white light.

Studio Class - Week Two Shoot...

exploring the relationship between light and how it effects the emotive nature of photography.
we decided on a few themes for the days shoot. Evil, loss & greed. Although we only really explored evil as it was the only theme i had brought props in for. I decided to go with the crazy lumberjack look as i thought it was easy to portray with my grotesque facial hair.
Using a simple light setup of one light with softbox to the right of the subject. It's interesting to see how the lighting strategy can create an eerie, mysterious feel. And combined with the subjects emotive physical traits, can really represent a strong feel of the theme of evil...

Some of these shots are quite descriptive in emotion and feeling although the angle at which they are taken is a little static.

I particularly like the action shot, it's kind of what i had in mind before the shoot, and it was only by accident i think that it was actually taken.

These images are amazing. There of a character from japanese television in the 60's called Ultraman. The combination of text, illustration and photos is something that I would like to explore in my work.

I particularly like the cut-through section showing what lies within Ultraman's body/vehicle etc.
And the general look and feel of the paper that these are printed on is quite unique. very fibrous. looks like old comics etc. i am also very interested in japanese cinema and animation.
so perhaps it would be good to take my photography in that direction. Especially when i'm in need for a theme or concept.

Using light to create an emotion...
Themes to be explored: Evil, Loss & Greed

some ideas i thought combined with appropriate lighting would capture each of the themes.

Ideas for Evil:

- bloodthirsty lumber jack.
With my beard and a flanno. perhaps an axe. blood splashing. combined with hard light.
typical horror-ish look that i could pull off as the model.

"...i'm a lumberjack and i'm okay".

i'm enjoying this lighting setup. it'd work well for an action pose (similiar to this dickhead). perhaps lunging with axe towards the camera etc...

- flasher/pedophile.
Crazy hair. Long overcoat. Old man's glasses. Harsh lighting from below perhaps.

- crazed business man.
I was thinking a man with a business suit with a simple bowtie. Splattered with blood.
creating a look as though he'd just gone a killing spree. bright light maybe?? create mixed messages.

Ideas for Loss:

- bushfire victim.
singed clothing. ash on face. look of despair. would bring about strong emotions. could perhaps be something seen on fundraising media. similar to advertising recreating traffic accident awareness etc.

i could see this image working really well for loss, really captures the details in the face.

- widow mourning death.
black dress and headdress. dark makeup (perhaps makeup running)

Ideas for Greed:

- Money falling from sky.
photocopy money and print lots out. bright colour. bright light.
Greasy looking man in suit. Fat man?

haha. awesome!

- Man stuffing his face.
table full of food. man stuffing his mouth. food falling to the table. high key.

fuckin wild 1983 fantasy/adventure film.

amazing themes!
the costumes themselves are very tacky.

finally went and had a look at the Rennie Ellis exhibition at NGV.
i had seen a bit of his work published in vice magazine last year and from what i saw, i really liked. and i heard good things about the show...

i thought it was great seeing how the australian way of life was back in the 70's and 80's...and the diversity of people...from celebs to junkies on the streets of melbourne.
and his work documented this so well...
